Description :Hybrid Maximum-Likelihood Decision Feedback MIMO receiver

The demand for wireless digital communications capacity is always increasing. Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems have proved to be a viable solution due to their advantages such as increasing data rates without augmenting the transmit power or bandwidth. In such wideband systems with high-data-rates, the signal bandwidth exceeds the channel coherence bandwidth and therefore suffers Intersymbol Interference (ISI) due to the frequency-selective fading nature of the channel. Hence, the use of equalizers at the receivers is essential to improve the performance of MIMO systems.

Our research is concerned with an efficient compromise between performance and complexity of MIMO equalizers. Maximum-Likelihood Sequence Estimation (MLSE) and Decision-Feedback Equalizers (DFE) are used together to reduce the complexity and to obtain a near-optimal performance. We propose a receiver that does not employ tentative decisions as in the Partitioned Viterbi Algorithm (PVA) previously proposed by Miller et al.
